Project 4: Cohorts

The Realities of the Professional Development of School Personnel in Seven Major Canadian Cities

Project 4 follows the professional development of 500 teachers and principals in schools situated in seven Canadian cities (Halifax, Moncton, Montréal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Vancouver). Each year from 2002 to 2007, these people will complete a questionnaire. Those who live in the large urban centers will also participate in three interviews.

All these people have voluntarily agreed to participate in this research. We sought their collaboration through the school boards and school districts, from their professional associations and by the school principals. We sought out teachers who had just entered the profession (less than five year’s experience) and others with more experience but who would be retiring after 2007. The school principals also voluntarily agreed to participate.

The research themes at the heart of Project 4 are career development and its stages, work conditions and the renewal of education personnel, the impact of the reforms and education policies, the training and professionalization of the school personnel and the transformation of pedagogical practices.
